The separation effect of molecular sieves on oxygen and nitrogen is mainly based on the different diffusion rates of the two gases on the surface of molecular sieves. Carbon molecular sieve is a carbon-based adsorbent that has some characteristics of activated carbon and molecular sieves. Pressure swing adsorption usually uses two towers in parallel, alternately performing pressurized adsorption and decompression regeneration to obtain a continuous nitrogen flow.

 

The method of using air as raw material, carbon molecular sieve as adsorbent, applying the principle of pressure swing adsorption, and utilizing the selective adsorption of oxygen and nitrogen by carbon molecular sieve to separate nitrogen and oxygen is generally called PSA nitrogen production. This method is a new nitrogen production technology that has developed rapidly in the 1970s. Compared with the traditional nitrogen production method, it has the characteristics of simple process flow, high degree of automation, fast gas production (15 to 30 minutes), low energy consumption, product purity can be adjusted within a large range according to user needs, convenient operation and maintenance, low operating cost, and strong device adaptability. Therefore, it is quite competitive in molecular sieve nitrogen generator below 1000Nm3/h, and is increasingly welcomed by medium and small nitrogen users. Molecular sieve nitrogen generator has become the preferred method for medium and small nitrogen users.

 

Factors affecting nitrogen purity

 

1. Related to the performance of carbon molecular sieve

A carbon molecular sieve adsorbent with superior performance should be selected. It should have the characteristics of large adsorption capacity, good selectivity, high porosity, small bed dead space, high mechanical strength, good chemical stability, etc., so as to improve product quality and recovery rate and reduce the size of the adsorption tower.

2. Related to adsorption pressure

Increasing the adsorption pressure is beneficial to improving the purity of product nitrogen, especially for atmospheric desorption. Generally, the adsorption pressure of atmospheric desorption is 0.55~0.85MPa.

3. Related to gas production

Nitrogen purity is inversely proportional to gas production. For the same device, the greater the gas production, the lower the product purity. The nitrogen recovery rate is generally used to measure the capacity of the device.
