Advantages of Small Nitrogen Plant

Can Be Used for a Variety of Industries
Small nitrogen plants can be used in many industries where high purity nitrogen is required. Generators can be used in the field as well as in industrial settings. So, what exactly are generators used for? Food packaging, fire suppression, draft beer gas, and corrosion prevention. Other industries that use small nitrogen plants include:
● Electronics manufacturing
● Metal and heat treating
● Wine making
● Adhesive purge

Convenient Size, Space Efficient
Small nitrogen plants take up a minimal amount of space compared to nitrogen cylinders. Many businesses find they must keep more cylinders on hand than they need at any given time to ensure a continuous supply. For this reason, cylinders take up an unnecessary amount of space. Small nitrogen plants are far different. Because of their relatively small size, small nitrogen plants can be installed in more convenient locations than cylinders.

Will Not Run Out
Nitrogen cylinders contain a finite amount of nitrogen. When that nitrogen runs out, the business owner may not have enough nitrogen to continue industrial processes unless they have more cylinders. This is the continuous trouble with nitrogen cylinders: they must be constantly replaced. Small nitrogen plants never run out of nitrogen. As long as the generator is operating, it will also continue to supply nitrogen. For many business owners, this is preferable to nitrogen cylinders.

Environmentally Friendly
Cylinders must be delivered via transportation that burns fossil fuels, which makes cylinders the less environmentally friendly option for any commercial business that requires nitrogen. small nitrogen plants, on the other hand, are delivered once and then can be used on-site forever after. These eco-friendly products are far better for the environment than cylinders.

Cost Efficient
Small nitrogen plants have a rapid ROI when compared to nitrogen cylinders. Whereas cylinders represent a continuous cost for any business that uses them, small nitrogen plants are available for a one-time cost. This makes small nitrogen plants far more cost-effective. Experts say that businesses can start seeing returns on their investment after 18 months of owning a nitrogen gas generator. Compare this to the nitrogen cylinders, which have no return on investment, and the choice is obvious.

Types of Small Nitrogen Plant

Membrane Nitrogen Generators
This type of nitrogen generator pushes compressed air through semipermeable membranes made of bundles of hollow polymer fibers to separate them into component gasses. The hollow fibers are very small, with tiny pores across the surface. Compressed air is introduced into the fibers, and as it contacts the membrane, the oxygen, water, and trace gases pass through the pores and are discharged. Because the nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules, they do not pass through the membrane. Instead, the nitrogen is contained within the membrane and directed through the outlet port. Membrane technology is efficient and straightforward. Generators using this type of process are often all-in-one units that are very low maintenance with zero operational costs. They are ideal for applications where the necessary flow of nitrogen is relatively low and required purity levels are under 99%.

Pressure Swing Adsorption Nitrogen Generators
PSA nitrogen generators use pressure swing adsorption technology to produce a continuous flow of nitrogen gas from compressed air. This type of generator consists of two towers, or vessels, that are filled with carbon molecular sieve (CMS), which absorb oxygen and other trace molecules during the process. In PSA generators, compressed air is introduced to the bottom of the online vessel and goes up through the CMS. Oxygen is absorbed while nitrogen molecules are allowed to pass through. After a specific, preset amount of time, the online vessel switches to regenerative mode, which vents contaminants from the CMS. Carbon molecular sieve is different than regular activated carbons in that it has a smaller range of pore openings, allowing small molecules (like oxygen) to pass through the openings and become separated from nitrogen molecules which are too big to enter the CMS. The larger molecules of nitrogen bypass the CMS and emerge as the product gas.

Various Applications of a Small Nitrogen Plant for Food Packaging

Uses of nitrogen in industrial food preservation

It is a challenging job for food industrialists to maintain the quality and nutritional value of their food products till consumed by buyers. They need a small nitrogen plant for food packaging, to preserve different foods in this tropical climate. Small nitrogen plants supply nitrogen gas continuously, to meet the requirements of customers.

01

Crunchy snacks

Peanuts and other snacks usually lose their original crunchiness when they come in contact with atmospheric moisture. Only dry nitrogen gas can replace humid air in sealed packets and preserve the actual taste of peanuts, chips, popcorn, and other crunchy snacks.

02

Fresh fruits and vegetables

The moistness of fruits and vegetables can encourage the growth of mold, resulting in the rotting of those food products. However, pure nitrogen gas can preserve the freshness of these fruits and vegetables and prevent untimely spoilage. Thus, fresh fruits and vegetables are packed well in air-tight packages that are filled with nitrogen.

03

Wines in breweries

Most varieties of wines and alcoholic drinks are prepared by fermenting fruits, rice, and other food products. Beer and other wines can turn sour due to oxidation, resulting in spoiling their original taste. So, vessels should be freed of oxygen before storing wines, by passing pure nitrogen gas inside those containers.

04

Edible oil refineries

Different kinds of vegetable oils are prepared from soybean, coconut, corn, peanuts, sunflower seeds, and other products. The growth of mold can be prevented, which usually thrives well only in contact with oxygen. Hence, only an atmosphere of pure nitrogen can save oil from fungal growth.

How Does a Small Nitrogen Plant Work with Your Facility's Air Compressor?

Compressed Air Supply

The air compressor draws in ambient air, compresses it, and delivers it to the nitrogen generator. The quality of the compressed air is crucial because contaminants like moisture, oil, and particulate matter can affect the nitrogen generator's performance and lifespan. That's why compressed air is typically filtered and dried before entering the generator.

Air Separation Process

Once compressed air reaches the nitrogen generator, the separation process begins. In membrane systems, the compressed air flows through membrane fibers, separating nitrogen from oxygen and other gasses. In PSA systems, compressed air passes through adsorption towers where oxygen is adsorbed, leaving nitrogen gas.

Nitrogen Storage and Delivery

Once the nitrogen is separated, it can either be used immediately in your facility or stored in high-pressure tanks to use later. The nitrogen can be delivered to various production areas through a network of pipes, providing a constant supply of nitrogen for your operations.

How Does a Small Nitrogen Plant Work?

An onsite small nitrogen plant typically cannot generate gas alone during nitrogen gas production. Instead, the nitrogen generator purges the nitrogen in the air, and there is about 78% air content in nitrogen.

Meanwhile, molecules, including carbon dioxide, water, and oxygen, are expelled from nitrogen gas during generation.

The separation process is aided by a nitrogen compressor that supplies air to the nitrogen generator system. The purification then occurs either through a membrane and other filters or the Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) system and other filters.

A membrane nitrogen generator is a compressor-based system. In this method, the air is compressed and moved via a membrane of hollow fibres. The pores are small enough to prevent nitrogen from being driven with oxygen and high purity nitrogen gas is filtered.

PSA technology is another nitrogen compressor-based system. During PSA nitrogen generation, an air compressor is used to provide nitrogen from atmospheric air.

The generator then moves nitrogen gas through a column containing Carbon Molecular Sieve (CMS). During the process, gases, including oxygen, are adsorbed by the CMS, which lets nitrogen move through.

A typical PSA nitrogen generator requires two CMS columns. One column sends nitrogen at pressure via the sieve while the second is depressurised.

PSA technology is also designed to expel moisture and dust from the air. The process is achieved before arriving at the CMS via a multistage prefiltration process.

A Guide to Selecting the Right Small Nitrogen Plant for Your Facility

Which Type of Nitrogen Generating Systems Do You Need?
There are two types of small nitrogen plants available: PSA type small nitrogen plants and membrane type small nitrogen plants. Nitrogen purity requirements will typically dictate the type of small nitrogen plant that is best suited for an application however other factors may also come into play. In general, when nitrogen purity requirements are 98% or lower membrane type nitrogen gas generators will have a lower capital cost then PSA type nitrogen gas generators and will be comparable in operating efficiency. Membrane systems can supply nitrogen purity as high as 99.5% however their operating efficiency falls off considerably at nitrogen purity requirements above 98%. For nitrogen purity requirements greater than 98% and up to 99.999% PSA systems are more cost effective.

How Much Space Do You Have?
Both membrane type and PSA type nitrogen gas generating systems are relatively compact and can fit in most industrial floor spaces. In the event sufficient space isn't available containerized systems can be designed and assembled that can be located outside the plant.

What Is the Cost of a Nitrogen Gas Generating Systems?
The initial investment in a nitrogen gas generator may seem costlier than simply purchasing nitrogen from a conventional industrial gas supplier, but it will definitely save you money in the long run. The speed at which you recoup your capital cost in a small nitrogen plant will depend on the scale of your business and the amount of nitrogen you consume. The price of a small nitrogen plant can range greatly depending on nitrogen purity requirements and nitrogen flow capacity requirements. Typically, the capital cost could begin at approximately $10,000 and go up to $500,000 or more. That's why assessing your present usage and requirements is critical before purchasing.

Ultimate FAQ Guide to Small Nitrogen Plant

Q: How to work a nitrogen generator?

A: One vessel is filled with compressed air at high pressure and runs its cycle, then the other vessel takes over immediately to ensure a continuous stream of nitrogen. When the pressure is released on the first vessel, the oxygen is released back into the air and the process keeps repeating itself.

Q: Do nitrogen generators need compressed air?

A: The principle of operation for a membrane nitrogen generator is where atmospheric air is compressed by an air compressor and passed through a hollow fibre membrane, filtering out parts of air (primarily oxygen) leaving behind a high purity nitrogen gas.

Q: How much does it cost to build a nitrogen plant?

A: Small flow nitrogen generators generally start at $3000 and go up to $20,000. Mid flow nitrogen generators range between $20,000 and $100,000. Large flow nitrogen generators are $100,000 and above.

Q: What is the working principle of nitrogen generation plant?

A: Oxygen and trace gases get absorbed through the CMS letting nitrogen to pass through. This filtration takes place in two towers both of which contain a CMS. When the on-line tower vents the contaminants, it is known as the regenerative mode.

Q: How long does a nitrogen generator last?

A: PSA nitrogen generators are typically designed with an equipment life cycle of 20 to 25 years. Membrane nitrogen generators also have a long life cycle. Some manufacturer's membranes can last up to 15 years before replacement is required.

Q: Are nitrogen generators safe?

A: On-Site Nitrogen Generators Are the Safest Way to Supply Nitrogen. On-site nitrogen generators use either PSA or membrane technology to extract nitrogen from the air.

Q: What are the ventilation requirements for a nitrogen generator?

A: Regardless, wherever possible, a nitrogen generator should be located in an open, ventilated area. More importantly, most air compressors installed are air cooled and produce significant heat in the cooling process.
